Week 70 ~ Smallest Island on the Mission

Image
Hello everybody, hope that you are all doing well. I am too, although I was banished to the smallest island in the mission. The population here on Batan island is less than 8,000 people. To be frank, I think this is what it is like to serve in the 1920s. No electricity half the time, no wifi or data on the island. The only way is to have power and that's rare.  No cars here or tricys, we have to walk or bike because nobody will pick us up. Most the people live under thatch huts in the muddy jungle. Definitely the craziest thing I've experienced in my 17 months as a missionary.  Now I've maybe mentioned a lot of things that aren't ideal, but as I've learned in my mission, always look at the bright side of things: On the bright side, the people here are incredibly nice and kind to us missionaries. We get fed quite a bit and they always love to joke and laugh. Our chapel here is super nice, like it's a full on meeting house for like a small ward. It even has a full...

Week 67 ~ Ayaw ko kapag walang cuernte (I don't like when there isn't power)

Image
Don't be shy to send me an email, I wanna here from y'all!!! Anyway onto the actually email Sooo we had a brownout and it lasted literally two whole days. Life is hard here, especially when you don't have water, lights, air conditioning and you can't charge your phone. It was so hot last night and I just baked in the heat, and then we accidentally left our aircon on, because usually the brownouts are super short here. As soon as we got to church the power returned, and I remembered that we didn't turn off our AC. So when we returned from church our apartment was really chilly talaga. Sayang ang money ko talaga.  Spiritual stuffs:  This week I was given the opportunity to give a talk on agency. I chose to highlight 2 nephi 2:22-27 because this verse explains 3 questions. 1: where our agency comes from. 2: Why we have agency. 3: How to use our agency.  I highly recommend that you reread these BOM verses because they are powerful and very theologically inspiring. For e...

Week 66 ~ The volcano is erupting... and I live a couple miles away

Image
Sooo to cut to the chase, we saw the Mayon volcano was raised to level 3, which means that it's probably going to erupt. Then we noticed smoke coming off the top, and then a lot more smoke; then when we woke up the next morning the volcano had lava coming out from the top. Luckily, it's just a small eruption right now, with the top of the lava dome slowly flowing down the side. However, if the magna pressure builds, then it will explode like a soda can does when you shake it. So we might have to evacuate. We wouldn't be in immediate danger, however, the ash fall could be dangerous to our health. Our Mission President told us to have seven days worth of clothes ready at all times, so that's been great. Anyways onto the spiritual stuff: Our friend Sister Mardy is progressing, She is a single mom, about age 53, and her kids are members. It was nice because at church I saw her talking to members and being assimilated in. The members here are so kind, talaga. We hope that sh...

Week 65 ~ Six Food Appointments?

Image
We had the craziest food day on new year's day, But let's start with the why it happened: Here in the Philippines food is kinda considered sacred. For example, if someone is eating it's considered very disrespectful in the culture to interrupt them. Like if we are home-to-home knocking and we see someone eating, we aren't allowed to knock. Also, if they offer food or a lunch appointment, it's also super disrespectful to decline. So what happened is on new year's day literally everyone invited us over. Sooooo it means we literally ate food the whole day. I'm not joking at all. Six meals, and I almost threw up but I made it. Cause keep in mind Fillipinos eat rice with every meal, and they stack the plate not you. We didn't tell them that we are coming from food, so I probably had around 12 plates cause my dad taught me as a missionary you always ask for seconds.  Anyway it was a fun new year's day haha. When I looked at my stomach in the mirror at nigh...

Week 64 ~ Happy New Year!!

Image
Casual na ako pero wassup everyone???  Happy new year to everyone and hope you all are doing fantastic!!! First I just wanna say Christmas was lit this year, even though it was just me and my companion we still had a lot of fun and ate lots of food at our apartment. So much has happened but I'd just like to say the work here in the Pines is going well. People here are so kind and usually I don't talk about that (cause we are getting rejected constantly) but they really are amazing. The miracles we see every day no matter how small are amazing. We went caroling and had so much fun singing to everyone. Even though it's kinda embarrassing (I would get 5 X'd on America's Got Talent fs) it was still great.  Anyway kinda long email, But I have an invitation: If Jesus Christ was going to return on New Years, what in your life would you change? Would you repent more? Be more honest and give to your fellow men? Tomorrow isn't promised, but I know that if you apply this t...

Week 62 ~ 1st Phone Down

Image
My phone fell out of my pocket on a tricy last week and the screen is completly cooked. It's expensive to replace so I guess I'll wait to see if they'll give me a new one. Pray for me and that they won't charge me 2000 pesos  Anyway what's up people? Masaya pa din ako, although the phone thing is annoying, cuz it's like we're in the old days with one phone. I never realized how convenient it is to have two phones. Updating the PMG and texting our friends is so much faster. With one it takes so much longer, talaga.  Right now we are struggling, because in the city it's really hard to have friends to come to church. If you're out in the rice fields or an area like that, people for the most part aren't busy, but if you're in the city the people always have school, work or have to do laundry. So it's a little bit harder here because there's so many more challenges but maganda pa din talaga. BUTTTT our success is that we had some friends c...

Week 61 ~ Noah's Flood

Image
It has rained so much this week I wouldn't doubt that someone somewhere on earth has built an ark to survive. Anyway Hello everyone, Been awhile but in the famous words of Pearl jam "Heyyyyy ohhhhhh, I'm still alive". More than alive, Masaya pa din (still happy also), Let's get to the weekly recap now: - I've probably spent a hundred million dollars on Jollibee and Mcdonalds and I don't regret it. If you're wondering what my order is, it's two chicken sandwiches, medium fries, Large coke float, and chocolate sundae.  -We walked through a sketchy area and a bald old man in a dress cat called me, saying something about how he wants to hook up with an American. The Spirit had me leave as fast as I could, I felt like Joseph running from Pharaoh's wife.  -One of our friends has a guitar, and my comp taught me basic chords. Now I'm obsessed and want to buy a guitar so I'll let y'all know my progress. It's not hard because I know piano...
